Fire Island Concessions is very pleased to tell you that Watch Hill will be open Columbus Day Weekend.
The National Park Service along with the Federal Highway Administration anticipates beginning substantial infrastructure improvements at Watch Hill and Sailors Haven. These improvements include the construction of better fastening systems for the docks, new dock surfaces, and overall improvements to the electrical distribution to protect it against future storms. Once completed, the government assets at both locations will be able to better withstand the forces of future hurricane. Separate from this project, but part of the overall Sandy Relief Act, the National Park Service will dredge the entire length of the Watch Hill Channel as well as the boat basin.
Although subject to change, The National Park Service does not anticipate any interruption to visitor services, and we are confident it will not impact the 2014 boating season.
Enjoy the rest of this beautiful summer season at Watch Hill.
As you are all aware, the conditions of the Watch Hill Channel have grown increasingly problematic since Hurricane Sandy. The shoaling of the high points has only worsened from this past winter to the point where we had the problems with ferry service we all experienced July 4th weekend. We understand the frustrations many of you experienced that particular weekend, and we want all of you to know the National Park Service along with the Davis Park Ferry Co. and Fire Island Concessions have discussed contingency plans, should such a service cancellation happen again.
Davis Park Ferry Co. will continue to provide ferry service between Patchogue Ferry Terminal and Watch Hill. If tidal conditions prevent a ferry from safely accessing the channel, then the run will either be delayed or cancelled. In situations where it is a mid-day trip, the trip would be cancelled, and the next scheduled ferry will provide service. If it is a trip at the end of the day, the vessel would be delayed until there is more water in the channel to provide safe travel.
Based on the tide-table, we've already identified specific days and trips which may be suspended, however we are confident the ferries will be able to continue providing service. Should a run be delayed or cancelled, there will be employees and signs posted throughout the boat basin to provide accurate information. Information will also be available on social media websites operated by the Fire Island National Seashore and Davis Park Ferry. Please remember that under no circumstances will a scheduled Watch Hill-Patchogue ferry operate out of Davis Park.
